Sakurajima Volcano with Lightning

The photo above is NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day. The Sakurajima volcano in southern Japan was caught erupting in early January. The cause of volcanic lightning is not clear at the moment, why lightning occurs even in common thunderstorms remains a topic of research.
